How We Rate Power Stations

How We Rate Power Stations

Last updated: October 15, 2026

Watt Wise Living exists for one reason: to tell you what a portable power station actually does, not what the box claims. Here is exactly how we evaluate every unit we cover.

What we check

Every review is built on a spec-verification pass. We pull the manufacturer’s published specifications, cross-check them against retailer listings and documentation, and score each unit on the same seven criteria:

  • Usable capacity (Wh): the headline number, and what it realistically runs. The number on the box is never the number you get, so we translate watt-hours into real appliances and runtimes.
  • Output power (W): what it can run at once, including surge ratings where published.
  • Charging speed: AC recharge time and solar input, because a station that takes all day to refill is a different product than one that refills in an hour.
  • Battery chemistry: LFP (LiFePO4) vs NMC and what it means for lifespan and safety.
  • Ports and UPS: outlet mix, USB-C wattage, and whether it offers uninterruptible switchover for home offices.
  • Portability: weight and size relative to capacity. A 50-pound unit is not “portable” the way a 15-pound one is.
  • Price and value (CAD and USD): what you pay per watt-hour, and whether a cheaper rival does the same job.

What we don’t do

  • No sponsored rankings. No brand pays for placement, scores, or verdicts. Affiliate commissions never influence which unit wins a comparison.
  • No box-spec hype. If a claim looks inflated, we say so. If a cheaper competitor beats the reviewed unit on a spec that matters, we name it.
  • Pros and cons, always. Every review lists what we’d change. A review with no drawbacks is an ad, and we don’t run ads disguised as reviews.

How we keep reviews current

Prices move, models get replaced, and specs change. We re-check prices and availability on a rolling basis and update our flagship rankings every quarter. When a unit is discontinued or replaced, we say so and point you to the current equivalent.

How we make money

Watt Wise Living is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our pages, we may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. Our affiliate disclosure appears at the top of every review, and our full Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data.
